Although the types of knowledge vary, most applications are found in expert systems for spectral interpretation (infrared, ultraviolet, mass or NMR) or elucidation of chemical structures [2-51. The expert system described here was developed as part of a project (Esprit project 1570) that evaluates the use of expert systems in the development of liquid chromatographic (LC) methods [6]. In this project, method development 1s divided into four domains: first guess of conditions, selection of criteria for optimization [7], optimization of instrumental parameters and operating conditions [B] and validation of the method [9-111. In this paper, the structure and implementation of the validation part is described.
